Knowledge is the First Step
This page does not tell you what to do. It presents what scripture says, what modern science has found, and leaves the decision with you.
Section 1 — Scripture
The dietary instructions are found primarily in Wayyiqra (Leviticus) 11 and Deḇarim (Deuteronomy) 14. These are not suggestions — they are part of the covenant instructions given to Yisra'ĕl (Israel). Importantly, these distinctions predate the Mosaic covenant: Noah was given clean/unclean distinctions in Bereshith (Genesis) 7:2, long before the Torah was formally given.
Clean (Permitted)
Unclean (Not Permitted)
"Do not make yourselves abominable with any swarming creature that swarms, and do not make yourselves unclean with them, lest you be defiled by them."— Wayyiqra (Leviticus) 11:43
Section 2 — The Cost of Not Knowing
Most people don't choose to eat unclean foods out of rebellion — they do it out of lack of knowledge. These foods are normalized through culture, tradition, fast food marketing, and family habits passed down for generations. Nobody questions what's on the plate because nobody taught them there was a reason to.
Pork is in nearly every cuisine. Shrimp is marketed as a lean protein. Catfish is a cultural staple. The food industry profits from the consumption of the cheapest, most accessible animals — which happen to be the same ones scripture identifies as unclean. The result is a population eating daily what was designed to be avoided, and wondering why chronic illness is so widespread.

The instructions were given thousands of years before germ theory, microscopes, or the FDA. The alignment between what scripture called unclean and what modern research now flags as harmful is not a coincidence. It is a pattern worth sitting with.
A Common Question
Many cite Acts 10 — where Peter sees a sheet of animals and is told "rise, kill and eat" — as evidence that all foods are now clean. However, the text itself provides the interpretation. Peter did not understand the vision to be about food. He said:
"Elohim has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean." — Acts 10:28
The vision was about people — specifically, that the message of the Messiah was for all nations, not just Yisra'ĕl. Peter himself tells us what the vision meant. It was not about pork.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Food | Scripture Says | Science Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pork / Pig | Unclean Split hoof but does not chew cud | Harbors Trichinella spiralis; absorbs toxins through skin |
| Shellfish | Unclean No fins or scales | Accumulate domoic acid, saxitoxin, heavy metals |
| Beef / Lamb | Clean Split hoof AND chews cud | Multi-chamber digestive system filters toxins effectively |
| Fish with scales | Clean Has fins AND scales | Scales limit absorption of environmental contaminants |
| Catfish | Unclean No scales | Consumes decomposing matter; higher PCB & mercury levels |
| Shrimp / Lobster / Crab | Unclean No fins or scales | FDA lists shellfish among top foodborne illness sources |
Modern World vs. Scripture
Modern culture normalizes foods the Bible calls unclean. Here's the comparison — no opinions, just the record.
Modern Reality
Pork is one of the most consumed meats in the world — normalized through culture, fast food, and tradition. Most people eat it daily without a second thought, never knowing it carries Trichinella parasites, high saturated fat, and is linked to colorectal cancer, hypertension, and liver disease. The lack of knowledge keeps the cycle going.
Scripture Says
"And the pig, because it has a split hoof, but does not chew the cud, it is unclean for you." — Wayyiqra (Leviticus) 11:7, HS
Modern Reality
Marketed as a "healthy lean protein," shellfish are a staple at restaurants and family gatherings. People consume them freely, unaware that shrimp and lobster are ocean filter feeders — they absorb heavy metals, bacteria, and toxins from polluted waters directly into their flesh. The health risks are rarely discussed.
Scripture Says
"These you do not eat among those that are in the waters: all that have no fins or scales in the waters... they are an abomination to you." — Wayyiqra 11:10-12, HS
Modern Reality
A cultural staple in many communities — fried catfish is passed down through generations as comfort food. But catfish are bottom feeders that scavenge decomposing matter from riverbeds. People eat them out of tradition, not knowledge. The result is regular exposure to PCBs, mercury, and industrial contaminants.
Scripture Says
Catfish has no scales — it falls under the unclean category. Deḇarim (Deuteronomy) 14:9-10 confirms only fish with fins AND scales are permitted.
Modern Reality
Ruminant animals like cattle and lamb are widely consumed and, when grass-fed and properly prepared, are among the most nutrient-dense meats available. Their multi-chamber digestive systems process food thoroughly, reducing toxin retention. These are foods people have eaten for thousands of years with well-documented nutritional benefit.
Scripture Says
"Whatever has a split hoof completely divided, chewing the cud, among the animals, that you may eat." — Wayyiqra 11:3, HS. Cattle and sheep qualify.
Modern Reality
Widely regarded as a clean, lean protein source. Chicken and turkey have been staples of healthy diets across cultures. When raised and prepared properly, they provide high-quality protein without the contamination risks associated with scavenger animals.
Scripture Says
Chicken and turkey are not listed among the forbidden birds in Wayyiqra 11 or Deḇarim 14. They are considered clean.
Modern Reality
Scaled fish like salmon and tuna are consistently recognized for their omega-3 content and cardiovascular benefits. Unlike bottom feeders, they feed higher in the water column and have protective scales that limit toxin absorption. These are among the most studied and recommended proteins in nutritional research.
Scripture Says
Salmon and tuna have both fins and scales — they meet the biblical criteria for clean fish. Wayyiqra 11:9, HS.
These instructions were given thousands of years before microscopes, germ theory, or the FDA. The alignment between ancient scripture and modern science is something worth sitting with. Draw your own conclusions.
